Responsible research assessment
Research assessment and evaluation are key drivers of research cultures. There is widespread recognition that research assessment practices are not always demonstrably fair and equitable and can be affected by a number of biases. These challenges have also been recognised by funders, for example, Research England expects institutions which receive quality-related research (QR) funding to adhere to principles of responsible research assessment (RRA).

- is primarily based on qualitative judgement, recognising the various roles and career pathways in research
- is supported by quantitative indicators, promoting diversity, equality and inclusion by adhering to transparent criteria and methods
- recognises the full range of activities and outputs that contribute to the quality and impact of research
- values integrity, rigour and openness in the conduct and communication of research
To demonstrate our commitment to the use of fair and transparent methods for the responsible assessment of research, the University signed the . Following the signing of the Agreement, focus groups and co-development workshops with key stakeholders to draft the University's Responsible Research Assessment principles have been held, and an implementation plan submitted to the (CoARA). Next steps involve setting up the implementation group who will deliver and work on developing specific guidance in relation to the RRA principles. Guidance will take the form of examples of good practice, toolkits, and training.
