What is commercialisation?
Commercialisation is the process of taking a research idea or output and developing it into a product or service on the market
It's a multi-step, iterative process, typically initiated by identifying an unmet need, followed by exploring whether an idea or research output has the ability to address this unmet need in practice. You鈥檒l need to gather evidence that your idea could work in practice and is viable and sustainable (financially) as a solution in the real-world.
This means reaching out and speaking to potential customers and industry experts to get their feedback early on. It鈥檚 also essential that research outputs (intellectual property) are appropriately protected and managed. Engage with the commercialisation team within the Knowledge Exchange and External Partnerships (KEEP) team early on, even at the idea stage of a project, to ensure a strategy is in place for intellectual property management.
