Knowledge transfer partnerships
A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a unique funded collaboration that brings together an external partner, the university, and a highly skilled individual—referred to as a KTP Associate - to deliver a strategic innovation project. Typically lasting between two to three years, a KTP provides a valuable opportunity to apply academic research in a practical setting enabling businesses, not for profits and public sector organisations to embed expertise, solve key challenges, drive innovation, and support sustainable growth.
Funded by and the partner organisation, KTPs have driven innovation and growth since 1975, generating over £2 billion for the UK economy and working with over 12,000 businesses.
For academics, KTPs offer the opportunity to apply your knowledge and expertise to real-world challenges, generate valuable research income, contribute to impact case studies, and lay the groundwork for long-term partnerships. Each KTP project typically involves at least two academic staff:
- The Academic Supervisor, who provides hands-on support for the KTP Associate, guiding their technical, academic, and professional development. This role requires a time commitment of at least half a day per week.
- The Lead Academic, who takes a broader strategic role, ensuring the university meets its obligations within the partnership.
