Private consultancy

Private Consultancy: Guidance for University Staff:

What is Private Consultancy?

Private consultancy is work you undertake independently, based on your professional expertise, in return for a fee or benefit.

While your reputation as a university staff member may inform this work, it must be clearly separate from your institutional role. You may undertake up to 20 days per academic calendar year of private consultancy, subject to Head of School or Head of Directorate approval.

Before You Begin

To proceed with private consultancy, you must:

1. Seek Approval

Obtain written consent from your Head of School or Directorate, who will confirm that:

  • There is no conflict of interest.
  • The work does not interfere with your university responsibilities. This should be included when submitting the Private Consultancy Approval Form.

2. Submit the Approval Form

Complete the Private Consultancy Form and send it to consultancy@reading.ac.uk.

Your Responsibilities

When undertaking Private consultancy, you must:

  • Act independently: Make it clear to clients that you are not representing the University.
  • Use personal resources: Do not use University facilities including academic software, email accounts, branding, or letterheads.
  • Manage your own contracts: Negotiate and sign agreements in your own name.
  • Handle finances: Receive payment directly and ensure you meet all tax, National Insurance, and VAT obligations.
  • Arrange insurance: The University does not provide cover for private consultancy; you must secure your own professional indemnity insurance.
