Contract research

Do you have research with the potential to make a real-world impact? Or鈥痑re you an external organisation seeking expert insight to address a specific challenge? If so,鈥痗ontract research鈥痗ould be the right pathway.

What is contract research?

Contract research refers to projects funded through a formal contract rather than a research grant. This model is often used when an external organisation—such as a business, public body, or charity—wishes to commission research that aligns with their strategic goals or operational needs. For鈥痚xternal organisations, this approach offers greater flexibility and control over project timelines, deliverables, and the use of results. For鈥痑cademic staff, it provides opportunities to apply research in real-world contexts, access new funding streams, and build long-term collaborations.

Key considerations

Unlike grant-funded research, where the University typically retains ownership of intellectual property (IP) and has freedom to publish findings, contract research may involve different terms. The commissioning organisation may seek to own or license the IP and may request restrictions on publication particularly where the research has commercial value or competitive significance.

Balancing impact and academic value

All contract research projects must align with the University’s charitable and academic mission. While the academic benefits may be less direct than in traditional research, they can include funding for further research, enhanced teaching resources, or access to unique data, tools, or facilities.
