Collaborative research and development (R&D)
Are you talking to an external non-academic organisation about some work that you could do together but need an additional funding source?
Need input from industry to take your research to the next level and enable it to have impact?
Are you an external organisation and need input from an expert at the University to take your ideas forward?
If so, a collaborative research and development project could be the ideal Knowledge Exchange pathway for you.
Collaborative R&D is undertaken jointly between a university and at least one external non-academic organisation, with public sponsorship (e.g. funding grants from a government or public body) and a contribution from the non-academic partner.
Key characteristics include:
- The collaboration must involve at least one non-academic partner, such as a business, charity, or public/not-for-profit organisation.
- The external partner鈥檚 contribution can be financial or in-kind (e.g. staff time, equipment, data) but must be contractually explicit and auditable.
- Collaborative R&D between universities only is excluded from this definition.
- The collaboration itself is the defining feature, not the nature of the research.
Sources of funding for collaborative R&D include:
- UK Research and Innovation, including Innovate UK, the seven Research Councils and Research England
- European Commissions (e.g. Horizon Europe) and European Government bodies
- UK Government
- Central Government Departments (e.g. Department for Health and Social Care)
- Local Authorities or NHS Trusts
- Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs) (e.g. Met Office, National History Museum, UK Space Agency, Arts Council England)
- International public bodies (e.g. World Bank)
