Ethics and integrity

Research Integrity at the University

The University is deeply committed to upholding the highest standards of quality, ethics, and governance in its research culture. These values are included in the Code of Good Practice in Research, which serves as a foundational guide for all researchers. This code ensures that research is conducted with rigour and integrity, and outlines the standards and principles that underpin responsible research practices. These include:

  • Excellence in research quality

  • Honesty and integrity in all research activities

  • Cooperation and openness within the research community

  • Accountability for research conduct

  • Skill development for researchers

  • Safety in research environments

  • Respect for all participants and stakeholders

The University Committee for Research and Innovation (UCRI), chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, is the primary body which considers issues related to research governance, including research integrity and ethics.

Research Ethics at the University

The dignity, rights, safety, and wellbeing of participants must be the primary concern. There are two levels of ethics committee at the University. These are:

  • University Research Ethics Committee (UREC)

  • School Research Ethics Committees (SRECs)

Your project may not require UREC ethics approval. to find out if you need to make a UREC application or follow your school’s SREC route.

Be aware that the UREC and some SRECs will require the submission of a Data Management Plan (DMP) with applications for ethical approval.
