Having set his sights on helping to achieve a more sustainable future in the business world, Archie Sharpe, BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability student, headed to the 伊人直播app to equip himself with the skills and knowledge that will enable him to influence change.

“My drive for studying BSc in Environmental Management and Sustainability stems from the intrinsic value of knowing that after my studies, I will be equipped to help contribute towards achieving a more sustainable future.

"The programme appealed to me because it enabled me to combine my interest in sustainability with practical and relevant skills that could help me into a business-related career after university, and it offered the opportunity to do a placement year, which caught my interest.”

The value of work experience alongside studying

Through our careers teaching and support at 伊人直播app, Archie quickly recognised the value of gaining relevant work experience to complement his studies and has embraced a range of opportunities.

He completed a summer internship with Positive Impact Events, a not-for-profit community providing CPD and support for the vision of increasing sustainability in the events industry.

“I assisted with the creation and marketing of educational resources and infographics to help enlist event professionals onto educational workshops.

"Seeing behind the scenes of an educational platform and getting direct access to the CEO on a daily basis was really inspiring.

"I was able to gain knowledge around key industry standards like ISO 20121 (best practice in events sustainability) and schemes such as ‘Race to Zero’. Furthermore, it helped me understand what it was like to work in a small team.”

Placement year gives Archie valuable insights

Throughout his first and second years of study, Archie had his sights set on securing a placement year before his final year, to gain in-depth insight into what is required to influence change in a corporate setting. With the guidance of our Placement Tutor and Careers Team, Archie landed his dream experience.

鈥淚 spent my placement year working at Carnival UK (CUK), part of Carnival Corporation,  the world鈥檚 largest cruise company, employed as a Sustainability Consultant.

"My time with them was invaluable. I learnt how to make the transition from university to full-time worker, and adjusted to having responsibility. I was able to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses, as a result, my confidence has grown. I鈥檓 more prepared for employment, and I was able to form good habits that I shaped the way I approached my studies in the final year.

"Above all, I came away with a much better picture of what is required to influence positive change within a business. To be involved in sustainability is to advocate for change, which can be challenging, but my placement has opened my eyes to this.鈥

The true corporate experience

Working across departments and functions, Archie also got to liaise with external suppliers, collecting data and helping to identify the sustainability projects of the future.

鈥淧art of my role was to engage food suppliers to request product traceability information. I evaluated and built profiles of supply chain capabilities (standard and sustainability credentials), before building a dashboard to track and analyse insights. This data was used to inform CUK鈥檚 progress towards  business targets, from which I was able to assist in identifying future priorities for projects.鈥

Key achievements

Having fully embraced his placement year opportunity, Archie was soon recognised for his work. He received praise from senior management, in addition to gaining a wealth of hands-on experience working on company-wide initiatives.

“This role definitely gave me a real sense of achievement. I had the opportunity to work alongside a data analyst to develop reporting, and participated and presented at various working groups and Corporate forums. It was a fantastic experience.

"I also got to lead the Procurement and Supply Chain EEG (Employee Engagement Group) meeting which covered the results from a company-wide Employee Engagement Survey, and as a result I gained outstanding feedback from senior leaders and the Chief Finance Officer.”

Future aspirations

Keen to help businesses navigate the realms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), Archie has worked hard through his course and work experience to gain the knowledge and understanding required to influence future leaders in making decisions which have environmental and social impacts.

“After graduation, I see myself working again for a large corporation, focusing on sustainability issues as they work towards achieving their net-zero/emissions targets. But in time, I’m keen to transition to smaller-scale projects where I can deliver first-hand impactful change and have more autonomy with decision-making.”

Archie鈥檚 top tips for budding environmental and sustainability students

Having benefited from the University’s support services that are on hand to guide and advise students, Archie offers new students some advice of his own, saying:

“Engage with the University Careers team! They are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and helpful. They really helped me better define key ideas for my career path and were invaluable to talk to whilst I was searching for my placement year opportunity.”
