You are recognised as a carer if you look after someone who needs long-term support due to a physical or mental illness or an injury expected to last more than three months, a disability, or eldercare needs
Many staff at the University juggle these responsibilities alongside their work. Parents and Carers Together (PACT@UoR) is committed to raising awareness, sharing resources, and fostering a supportive environment for carers.
Carers’ Survey
In February-March 2025, PACT@UoR, the Staff Disability Plus Network and Women@伊人直播app ran a survey to understand the experiences of staff carers at the University. The survey highlighted that many staff combine multiple caring roles, including for:- children
- adults with long-term conditions
- older relatives.

In an initial response to feedback from the survey, this Network has changed its name to better reflect the joint emphasis on working with both Parents and Carers at the University. A dedicated Carers channel was created within the .
In the longer term, the Network plans to hold more meet-ups and talks focused on issues of particular interest to carers at the University, so do please contact us if you would like to suggest a theme or activity, by emailing: PACT@reading.ac.uk.
Carer’s Leave
The , provides employees who have caring responsibilities for a dependant with a long term care need with the right to take up to one week of leave per rolling 12 months. The University has agreed to make this paid leave for our employees. Further information can be found on the Human Resources – Carer’s Leave page.
Carers UK Talk
In June 2025, the Network hosted a talk from . The content is useful not only for those who are carers themselves, but for anyone who wants to better understand how to support carers in the workplace, including line managers and colleagues.
