ICJ climate change opinion: expert available for interview
22 July 2025

The International Court of Justice will give its advisory opinion on climate change on 23 July at 2pm UK time (3pm CET).
Professor Benoit Mayer, Professor of Climate Law at the 伊人直播app, is available for interview following the ICJ announcement. To arrange interviews, contact the 伊人直播app Press Office on 0118 378 5757 or pressoffice@reading.ac.uk
Professor Benoit Mayer said: “This will be the very first decision of the world’s highest court on the world’s greatest challenge.
“Some of the key questions the opinion will have to address are whether states have obligations that go beyond their specific commitments under the Paris Agreement, how human rights treaties require states to address climate change, and how the interests of future generations are protected under international law.
“The responses the Court gives to these questions could have major implications for our collective understanding of states’ duties in the face of global warming.
“While the expectations from this advisory opinion are extremely high, there is also plenty of room for disappointment, and one could question whether even the most progressive judicial pronouncement would persuade states to implement more ambitious climate policies.”
