Summary module description:
This module will use a case-based learning approach to explore main developmental and acquired disorders associated with speech, language, communication and swallowing with a focus on the application of linguistic, phonetic, medical and psychological theory to clinical disorders.听
Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an introduction to a range of clinical populations across the lifespan with whom speech and language therapists work and key management approaches that are used with these client groups.
Assessable learning outcomes:
- Outline the core features of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan
- 听Describe different models of treatment 听and management approaches for speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan
- Demonstrate understanding of the application of linguistics, medicine, phonetics and psychology theory to speech and language therapy practice.

Outline content:
This module will use a case-based learning approach to explore main developmental and acquired disorders associated with speech, language, communication and swallowing with a focus on the application of linguistic, phonetic, medical and psychological theory to clinical disorders.听 This will include the domains of speech, language, pragmatics, cognition and swallowing.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
PL1LCD1 will use a blended approach to teaching, including face-to-face lectures, online resources, case based learning (CBL) and seminars.听 Lectures and online resources will be used to introduce theoretical material for CBL exercises. Independent and group study will focus on CBL exercises and seminars will be used for discussion of CBL cases.
